Ilocos Sur is a province rich in culture that represents the ancient Spanish and Filipino heritage. When January is approaching we Ilocanos are looking forward to Kannawidan Festival. It is mostly like the highlight of the month. This is a famous festival at the end of January that celebrates the best of Ilocos Sur culture, from traditional dress and folk dance, tribal rituals, and different contests. it is also a time to commemorate the anniversary of Ilocos Sur as a province since it was separated on February 3, 1818.
It is a famous and awaited annual celebration for it is the trademark and it represents our province and the people. It is a celebration that lasts from the last week of January up to the first week of February. Included in the course of events is the commemoration of the foundation day of the province. It aims among others, to underscore the importance of preserving the people’s rich culture and traditions, as well as to promote the province’s products which are mostly agricultural.
Due to this pandemic, we haven’t celebrated the usual festival that we used to. It was restricted and limited. The street dancing, the food, and the whole event weren’t done by this year for we can’t risk our lives. Still, they made a different way, such as the one of the most awaited big event, Saniata ti Ilocos, was done live. We may not celebrated it the usual way, but the respect and joy of our culture are still there and always will remain.
